Oh how we will miss Rusty's music, humor and tenderness.
We ran into him in the subway a year ago and he was in such good spirits inspite of his recent hospital stay and apparent sickness. We told him we were preparing to adopt a child from Cambodia and he was so excited for us.
He will live on in all those he touched.
Our heart goes out to Allison and Nat.
You knew him best of all.

To Rusty's family and friends,
I knew Rusty, thirty years ago, at Exeter. I felt sadness, first when I learned of his illness, and especially now. If I feel sad after knowing him briefly and not seeing him for thirty years, I cannot imagine how you must feel. Reading about accomplishments provides only a small insight into a person, but the sense I have from reading about Rusty is that he brought the enduring qualities of light, joy, and music into the world.

"a radio broadcaster once said today is a canceled check, tomorrow is a promisary note live for today and move on, thow is part of the mosaic of life!"
these words mean something and something that must be found in the soul. and the soul is what makes us live and breath the freedom to show ourselves and be proud! and that is the most wonderful thing about Rusty Magee! he has the soul and passion that is very rare, it is the pride that only rusty has; the pride to love people for who they are and especially himself! not caring if people think what he does is stupid or if it's silly or if they call names or point but he gets up on the stage and makes sure that the audiance knows that there is no one like him! that's what is so beautiful about Rusty! rusty is a star in the sky who we will look up to, to envy that pride, passion, and individuality that is hard to seek.
we all love you, Rusty whether the out side of him still stands or if its gone to fly in the soft clouds for eternal we want you to know that you;re spirit will be within the ones who loved you till dawn.
have a restfull fly and dont forget to shine your true star EVERY night so the world can see a beautiful person, named
RUSTY MAGEE
peace and love with a tear forever far and near,

"From the left toe of the striker Magee--"
Rusty's favorite line in a poem read at the fall sports banquet (Nov. '68) Eaglebrook School, Deerfield, MA - JV soccer team.
Just found out today (2/24) of Rusty's passing. I have so many fond memories of Rusty and his fabulous sense of humor which could so easily be put to music.
And, of course, how could I forget "the left toe of Magee." Many memories still abound in my scrapbook. May his joy in music and life linger in us all.

It's sad news to hear about Rusty's passing - all of us in the community of players here in New York will miss him deeply. Allison, I'll see you around the campus, but please accept heartfelt condolences from a friend who did not know him well, but knew him for many years.
With Love,

Dear Allison and Nate,
Please accept my heartfelt sympathy. I remember last seeing Rusty in front of Apthorp Pharmacy. He was happy, as usual, and I was with my son, Henry. Henry just loved Rusty - he was so manic and funny. He was so full of life. He was so talented, and mostly, he was the nicest guy on earth. I will miss his big smile. I'll always remember the hell gigs we did together many years ago. We would crack up constantly. He was a real class act.
Love,
Judy

Allison,
I am so saddened to hear of Rusty's passing.
My deepest sympathies go to you and your family.
I first met Rusty at the West Bank Cafe doing Next Please!,in 1986. What a joy.
The song i had the privelage to have been accompanied on the piano by Rusty may as well have been written for him.
"If this man could see inside, what others see in him, He would
SHINE,
SHINE,
SHINE!"
And Rusty always did.
As his memory will forever.
With Love and Peace
Michael Brian

Shelley Berc:
Dear Allison and Nat
Rusty is so woven into the fabric of my adaptations that I feel he is part of my art forever. I would not have dared to develop Ubu Rock without knowing he would be there on the other side of the idea--the finished script--to make the musical be just that. He worked like a whirlwind. You would think nothing would be ready nothing and then suddenly three songs seemed to jump out of nowhere. He was so kind and generous to Andrei and I in working. He always wanted what was best for the show and nothing ever got in the way of that. He wrote incredible music and lyrics and gave us so much inspiration and our audiences so much joy. He is the reason that so many of Andrei and my adaptations became musicals. We would not have ventured there without him. I promise we will do everything possible to keep his music alive and giving off the joy, laughter, and wisdom that was the essence of his spirit.
